I-10 Tippecanoe Avenue Interchange, Caltrans EA 44810

This project proposed to reconstruct the Tippecanoe Avenue Interchange on Interstate 10 (I-10) in the Cities of San Bernardino and Loma Linda.  This heavily congested interchange is the access point for many different destination points.  This includes Loma Linda Medical Center, Loma Linda Veterans Administration Hospital, Loma Linda University, the logistical uses adjacent to the San Bernardino International Airport, including a two million square foot distribution facility for Stater Bros markets, a restaurant corridor and two large wholesale warehouse shopping centers in San Bernardino.

This $60 million project would provide additional lanes on Tippecanoe Avenue in San Bernardino and Anderson Street and Redlands Boulevard in Loma Linda and would reconfigure the interchange ramps to provide direct access to westbound I-10 for both north and southbound traffic, greatly improving the traffic flow to and from I-10.  This is particularly important for ambulances traveling to the Loma Linda Medical Center, which is the leading trauma center in San Bernardino County.  Delays for emergency vehicles are increasing and are unacceptable.  The project will alleviate much of the congestion around the interchange and will improve response times for emergency vehicles.

There are three fast food restaurants, two gas stations a sit-down restaurant, a motel and over three dozen residences involved in the right of way acquisition to construct this project.

Several different Federal, State and local funding sources are being utilized for this project including Federal Transportation Enhancement Account, Demonstration and several earmarks intended to improve traffic adjacent to the former Norton Air Force Base and delays to project delivery could result in the loss of those Federal funding sources.  There are also State funds for Right of Way and local Measure I dollars, along with City funding being utilized.

This project is now in the Right of Way acquisition and final engineering phases, but the Southstar project manager was key in successfully delivering the Project Report and Environmental Document phase of the project.
